Be Patient, Be Present: When Parents Grow Older

Be Patient, Be Present: When Parents Grow Older

When our parents grow older, life can begin to move at a different pace.

They may walk a slower.

They may take a longer to express themselves.

Constantly require clues to remember past incidents or people

Frequently...they may need you to repeat sentences....

For someone who is always rushing, these moments can be frustrating.

But maybe... aging is teaching us everything we forgot along the way:

Not all things in life ....needs to happen quickly.

Your parents spent years adjusting their pace to yours.

They waited while you learned to walk.

They listened while you learned to speak.

They stayed up when you were sick.

They celebrated your milestones.

They gave you time when you needed it.

Now, life may be asking you to give them some of that time in return.

And most importantly, be present.

Put down the phone.

Look into their eyes.

Listen to the stories you've heard before.

Ask about their favorite memories

Because sometimes, what an aging parent needs most isn't another solution.

It's your attention..

So when your parents move slowly, don't always see it as an inconvenience.

See it as an invitation…

to slow down with them.

Because one day, you may look back and realize that the moments you thought were taking too long…

were actually the moments you wished you could have back.

Be patient. Be present.

Your parents may not need you to make their later years perfect.

They may simply need you to walk beside them…

at their pace.
