The Emotional Side of Caring for Aging Parents

The Emotional Side of Caring for Aging Parents

Caring for aging parents is often described as an act of love.

And it is.

But there is another aspect that we don't always talk about.

The emotional side.

Because you can love your parents deeply… and still feel tired.

You can be grateful for everything they have done for you… and still feel frustrated when the same question is asked for the fifth time.

You can want to be consoling… and have moments when your patience runs thin.

And sometimes, that brings guilt.

Love doesn't make us immune to exhaustion.

When our parents reach their eighties and beyond, the relationship can slowly change.

The person who once gave you advice may now need yours.

The parent who once made decisions for the family may now depend on you

And watching that change can be heartbreaking.

You may find yourself grieving the parent they once were, while learning to cherish and be grateful for the parent they are today.

That's a complicated kind of love.

There may also be fear.

Fear of making the wrong decision.

Questioning yourself for... not doing enough.

And the phone ringing late at night.

And the hardest fear of all…

knowing that time is no longer something you can take for granted.

You don't have to be a perfect caregiver to be a loving child.

So don't measure your love by how much you accomplish.....

Simple acts like....sitting besides them and holding their hand.

the moments when you were simply present....

Aging changes many things.

And...the greatest gift we can give our parents isn't perfection.

It's presence, patience, and the reassurance that they don't have to walk this part of life alone.
