AUTOBIOGRAPHY (Pages 27 & 28)

DEBT, PAIN, AND DESPAIR

Life presented its hurdles, yet within the walls of our spacious two-bedroom apartment, graced with a lovely balcony, we found relief.

The elevator wasn't just a feature; it was a blessing, as climbing stairs felt like an insurmountable mountain.  Eventually, the crutch became a thing of the past, as I took each step forward like a hard-won victory. There was a slight bend in my right knee that everyone could see, but it was also a mark of courage.

It spoke not of limitation, but of the heart's fierce will to walk efficiently, to live blissfully and to embrace each moment with open arms.

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to visualize and treat problems inside a joint. It involves inserting a small camera (arthroscope) and other instruments through tiny incisions to diagnose and treat joint issues like damaged cartilage or ligament tears. Healing period is from a week to several months. It requires daily physical therapy, to restore range of motion along with swelling and pain is constant. The knee has to be elevated most of the time to avoid pain.

The arrival of the new convenience store was meant to bring ease, instead ushered in a wave of unforeseen difficulties.

Unbelievably, the weight of it all would sometimes cast a dark shadow, a fleeting but terrifying urge to end my life while driving.

Each day became a battle against dwindling inventory and mounting financial strain, leaving myself and my husband in despair. Turning back home wasn't a choice; the life we once knew was gone, leaving behind only the crushing weight of perceived failure. Amidst this turmoil, our son struggled. The demanding IB program, coupled with the upheaval of leaving his lifelong friends in Deland and the absence of his sister at college, proved a heavy burden for his young heart.

Just when the waves threatened to overwhelm us, my mother, my constant beacon, arrived once more. Her consistent love and support became our anchor, helping us navigate the overwhelming tsunami of life struggles that threatened to pull us under.

Each upright step was a quiet declaration that even when life throws obstacles, the spirit can rise, unbent and strong.

BATTLING ADVERSITY

Amidst the swirling chaos, a radiant moment broke through: our daughter's graduation from the Hall of Fame. We were invited to her University to attend the ceremony. It was a privilege to observe our daughter chosen as one of the top twenty five students from her university.

The University of Florida, Hall of Fame is the highest recognition given to student leaders at the University of Florida. Hall of Fame award winners exemplify outstanding commitment through their active participation in organized activities, community service, and academic achievement.

A surge of unimaginable pride filled our hearts as I helped her embark on a new chapter in Washington. Yet, beneath this joy lay a stark reality. We were drowning in debt, credit cards pushed to their limit, personal loans weighing heavily upon us.

The store, our venture, had become a relentless source of problems, consuming  precious time and draining our already strained resources. It felt like a solitary battle, a cruel irony as the world seemed to prosper while we poured our energy into endless repairs.

Our lives felt adrift, a tangled mess with no clear direction, as one problem simply gave birth to another.

Finally, a glimmer of hope: our son graduated from high school  and stepped into the promise of college. But peace remained elusive. Sleepless nights became my unwelcome companions, and even when exhaustion finally claimed me, it was in the awkward comfort of a recliner, a silent prayer for a miracle whispered into the darkness, a desperate yearning for respite from the constant ache.

FINDING SOLACE AND STRENGTH

Our apartment's balcony, a small haven, became my nightly vigil. As dusk settled, I would wait, praying silently for my husband's safe return from work. Gazing into the sky, the stars became my companions, their distant shimmer holding a strange comfort.

And when the rain fell, a childlike hope would stir within me, my eyes searching the sky for the vibrant arc of a rainbow, a whimsical yearning for that fabled pot of gold. It seems almost comical now, that desperate search.

With tears often blurring my vision, music became my joy, each note a trigger for memories that danced across the night sky like an old film reel. We had journeyed so far together, yet here we stood, on the precipice of an unknown future, the path ahead shrouded in uncertainty.

But amidst the chaos, our children shone like beacons. Their well-being was the force that fueled our weary spirits, the precious light that gave us the strength to keep fighting, to keep hoping for a brighter dawn.

THE LOWEST POINT

The knee injury I sustained severely impacted my mobility and my ability to work. This led to a financial crisis, exacerbating my already difficult situation. The pain was a constant reminder of my limitations, and the financial strain added to the emotional burden.

I still could not fathom that my right knee was damaged and that the surgery would take almost a year to heal, and I would not be able to work normally. I was limping, and my posture was horrible.

The physical attributes that I was so proud of were suddenly a memory.

My self-confidence was shattered, and I stopped listening to music. Every evening, my refuge would be to sit on the balcony and listen to sad songs and cry. I hated everyone. WHY ME ?

It was in these moments (Low Period) recognizing the importance of finding light even in the darkest of times, that I decided to write my autobiography, 'View From My Balcony (Life Lessons By Rachel)'.

I wanted to share my story of resilience, of overcoming adversity, to show others that even when fate seems overwhelming, we can find the strength to persevere and create a life filled with purpose and meaning.

My aim was to motivate others to look at their lives, no matter how difficult, from a perspective of hope and to find the miracles that are present even in the smallest of things.

At that moment, I had no clue where my life was heading. But I had a clear resolution in mind: one day, I would write my autobiography. I had come a long way from being a child, to a teenager, to an adolescent, to a young woman, and finally embracing motherhood. It is not just mine but every woman’s journey.

I believe all women who have conquered and elevated themselves in life, be it in their career, in managing a home, or in any life endeavors, deserve an award for simply being the women that they are .

I was not daunted or intimidated by society; I simply walked tall through the journey of my life with heroic strength and confidence.

" Many a times our life boat was tossed over by the storm of sea but we kept going did not stop as we knew these mere distraction Our Destination is yet to come”

COPING WITH STORE CRISIS AND HEALTH ISSUES

My husband and I faced significant challenges when circumstances made it impossible to sell our store in Deland. During this difficult time, we bought another gas station cum convenience store in Kissimmee.

Managing both stores was out of the question because of the hour-long driving distance between them and the restrictions I had due to my knee surgery.

My knee wouldn't straighten despite hours of physical therapy and exercise. The damaged cartilage needed replacement, and in hindsight, a knee replacement would have been a better decision.

But everything happened so suddenly that there was hardly time to contemplate the best course of action.

For a month, I was in a wheelchair before gradually transitioning to a walking crutch. It was the most depressing period of my life. The constant knee pain and financial stress were tearing me apart, both physically and mentally.

With no family or friends to support us, I wondered how anyone could cope with such a life calamity?

With a heavy heart, we decided to shut down the Deland store bearing the brunt of losing our capital investment.

Everything that we built financially to this point we lost within a matter of days.

It was the most depressive period of our lives and I could see in my husband’s eyes the sadness and grief he experienced inside, frantically searching for options. We were both helpless and our fate rested in the hands of destiny.

Buddha Quotes : helped me reignite the flame to hope and pray.

  • "The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly."

  • "In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of things, not meant for you

With a glimmer of hope and tireless determination we decided to wipe our slate of life clean and restart. We learned a long time ago to make the best of whatever life tosses. We never had a choice before and we did not have a choice now. We were both treading down a turbulent road not knowing where our fate would take us.

TRANSITIONS GRADUATION AND CHANGES IN THE OFFING

Watching our children grow felt like witnessing the unfolding of a beautiful story, each milestone a chapter infused with innocent wonder.

My daughter's graduation day arrived swiftly, and seeing her stand there as valedictorian – well, that remains etched in my heart as one of the proudest moments of our lives. It was a culmination of her hard work and our stable support, a moment where all the sacrifices, every ache and pain felt profoundly worthwhile.

But with such significant achievements come new horizons and transitions. As our daughter stood on the cusp of a new chapter, preparing to leave home, a bittersweetness settled over us.

Our hearts swelled with pride in her accomplishments, yet there was a quiet ache as the familiar rhythm of our family life began to shift. Our hard work, the countless hours poured into building our business, had indeed paid off, not without the help of my most wonderful husband my steadfast partner and solid support.

We celebrated my daughter's graduation as a family, a close-knit gathering reflecting her preference for intimacy over grand celebrations. Her move to the University of Florida, a two-hour drive away, marked the beginning of a new routine. Almost every other weekend, I found myself on that familiar stretch of highway, bringing her home for a brief respite and then sending her back with a car full of groceries.

There were times when exhaustion would overtake me, and I'd have to pull over for a short nap, gathering the strength to continue the journey.

While one part of our lives blossomed with our daughter's success, the other, the business we had poured our hearts into, began to present its own set of problems.

We knew we had to explore other options, even as the absence of our daughter left a noticeable void in our home. The thought of starting anew always felt daunting, a drain on our positive energy.

Yet, we understood that sometimes, necessity calls us to step outside our comfort zones and embrace the essential.

Life, it seemed, was very unpredictable therefore we were always on guard. Just when we thought we had reached a point of stability, a new challenge would emerge, bouncing us back into action. The prospect of searching for another business and starting over felt mentally draining and exhausting. The current venture had run its course, and was no longer serving its purpose.

Winds of Change were in the offing. “ Don’t watch the clock,do what it does, keep going”.

STORE CLOSING MOVE TO ORLANDO

However, with this new search, a dual purpose began to emerge. We also desired a better college for our son.

This realization sparked a revived sense of direction.

With the thought of serving both our son's educational needs and finding a viable business opportunity, we embarked on the unfamiliar territory of Orlando, commencing our search with rental apartments. We faced the unknown together, ready to welcome the next chapter, trusting in our ability to adapt and build from scratch, just as we had in the past.

"Setbacks have always been a part of our lives.” Losing one store and having to relocate to another brought uncertainty and stress. It felt like we were constantly being tested, pushed to our limits, but we refused to give up.

We shut the DeLand store, not without a huge amount of stress and financial loss. It was awfully sad that again and again we had to start from the ground up. Just when we thought we could finally breathe, life would throw a massive curveball. It felt as if the universe was testing our resolve.

But in these moments, we found our strength. We learned that misfortunes are not simply hindrances, but rather catalysts for change. Each time we were knocked down, we rose again, more determined than before. We embraced the challenges, knowing that they would ultimately make us stronger.

"At this time, I had to undergo an arthroscopy as I had ruptured my right knee. My son helped us pack and relocate to Orlando. I used to walk with the help of a stick and for the longest time had issues walking upright.

I went through excruciating knee pain as I struggled with standing and walking, and even sleeping at night.

For hours, I would sit on the apartment balcony, watching the sky as planes flew by, and wondered how long this ordeal would last ?

Pain, stress, and the financial crisis had simply become a part of our life..

Yet, it was together that we faced this adversity. My son's support during the move and in setting up our new home was a reflection of his concern for me. We learned to lean on each other, finding strength in our shared purposefulness.

Even in my darkest hours, watching those planes go by,  I held onto the hope that we would soar again, that we would attain our dreams."The only joy that would bring a smile to our lips was our daughter's constant achievements. Also, my mom traveled almost every year to help me with the kids and relocating.

A PHASE OF STABILITY WORK JOY AND PASSION

At this time, my self-confidence was at its peak, both mentally and physically. My exercise routine and weight management gave me an edge in everything I did. There was no stopping me. Money came in slowly but steadily. Life was pretty balanced: work, husband, kids, & home.

Every day was different, and each day had its own priority. I made sure that no matter what happened, My kids always came first. They were the most valuable jewels of my life. (And still are )They were the only ones rightfully meant for my destiny. We connected deeply and frequently went on cruises, visited theme parks, explored a variety of sports and took domestic trips, International trips —the most memorable times of my life.

The demands of work and raising my children was intense, a true test of my limits. To cope with this overwhelming pressure, I discovered Zumba. It wasn't just exercise; it became my sanctuary, a place where the vibrant music and movement allowed me to destress and rediscover joy amidst the daily grind. It energized and motivated me both physically and mentally.

My husband and I quickly immersed ourselves into the logistics of running a convenience store and gas station business. It was a steep learning curve, and we certainly stumbled along the way. With each mistake we got better, and before we knew it , we were experts in managing and running the store business.

The sheer physical toll of those long hours on our feet was extensive, and for a long time, hiring help wasn't a viable option. We faced it together, weary and exhausted at the end of each day yet strong and united in our efforts.

My days were carefully organized with a lot of responsibilities. I would wake up early to prepare breakfast, ensuring my children started their day nourished. Then came the school drop-offs, followed by the preparation of lunch and the endless cycle of household chores.

A brief respite would allow me to tackle banking before heading to the store for my shift. The evening brought its own set of demands: preparing dinner, taking the kids to the park, or chauffeuring them to their extracurricular activities. I remember countless times napping in the car, windows down, waiting patiently while they pursued their passions.

Weekends were dedicated to the essential task of buying inventory from wholesale clubs and stocking groceries – tasks that often involved long drives. Sometimes, my children would accompany me, watching movies in the backseat or reading.

As the proverb goes, “ Where there is a will, there is a Way”. The classic quote that defines focus, power and determination when facing obstacles.

DEMANDS OF BUSINESS AND SCHOOL

We worked diligently to create a stable and loving environment for our children. We made precious memories together, cherishing our time as a family. Their laughter and love filled my heart, reminding me of the importance of family and the enduring power of a mother's strength that can surpass every peril of life.

Life had pretty much charted its course. Early morning wake-up, late nights—a race to accomplish as much as possible. My focus was entirely on my children. Their academic success made us incredibly proud, inspiring us more than ever to achieve our dreams for a substantial life. We worked towards creating great customer relationships, making everyone feel like they were a part of the store family.

We secluded ourselves from family and friends as there was never any time. The store took up most of our days, and there were also the kids plus their extracurricular activity

There was no breathing time. But my love for music & dance stayed with me, and whenever I had a free moment, I would create my curated audio CD collection or practice dance moves. Listening to music during long drives was divine for me, and those were my reminiscing moments when I would get teary-eyed about how much my life had evolved from one country to another.

Looking back on that period, I am struck by the sheer resilience, that I discovered within myself. Zumba was my lifeline, and the business an indication of my tenacity and partnership with my husband, and my duty and commitment to my children, was like a stable solid force that will always stand by them for eternity. I didn't just survive those demanding years;

I stormed through them with strength and with sheer confidence. My story, I realize, is a powerful reminder that even when life feels overwhelming and challenging, the human spirit can not only endure but find moments of joy and ultimately thrive. I am proud of the power I found within myself and the life I built during that intense chapter. And all this was never going to be possible without my eternal companion, my husband.

I always felt :

"The tapestry of my personal experiences and narrative is rich with the threads of inspiration, motivation, and the wisdom of learning.
