AUTOBIOGRAPHY (Pages 27 & 28)

DEBT, PAIN, AND DESPAIR

Life presented its hurdles, yet within the walls of our spacious two-bedroom apartment, graced with a lovely balcony, we found relief.

The elevator wasn't just a feature; it was a blessing, as climbing stairs felt like an insurmountable mountain.  Eventually, the crutch became a thing of the past, as I took each step forward like a hard-won victory. There was a slight bend in my right knee that everyone could see, but it was also a mark of courage.

It spoke not of limitation, but of the heart's fierce will to walk efficiently, to live blissfully and to embrace each moment with open arms.

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to visualize and treat problems inside a joint. It involves inserting a small camera (arthroscope) and other instruments through tiny incisions to diagnose and treat joint issues like damaged cartilage or ligament tears. Healing period is from a week to several months. It requires daily physical therapy, to restore range of motion along with swelling and pain is constant. The knee has to be elevated most of the time to avoid pain.

The arrival of the new convenience store was meant to bring ease, instead ushered in a wave of unforeseen difficulties.

Unbelievably, the weight of it all would sometimes cast a dark shadow, a fleeting but terrifying urge to end my life while driving.

Each day became a battle against dwindling inventory and mounting financial strain, leaving myself and my husband in despair. Turning back home wasn't a choice; the life we once knew was gone, leaving behind only the crushing weight of perceived failure. Amidst this turmoil, our son struggled. The demanding IB program, coupled with the upheaval of leaving his lifelong friends in Deland and the absence of his sister at college, proved a heavy burden for his young heart.

Just when the waves threatened to overwhelm us, my mother, my constant beacon, arrived once more. Her consistent love and support became our anchor, helping us navigate the overwhelming tsunami of life struggles that threatened to pull us under.

Each upright step was a quiet declaration that even when life throws obstacles, the spirit can rise, unbent and strong.

BATTLING ADVERSITY

Amidst the swirling chaos, a radiant moment broke through: our daughter's graduation from the Hall of Fame. We were invited to her University to attend the ceremony. It was a privilege to observe our daughter chosen as one of the top twenty five students from her university.

The University of Florida, Hall of Fame is the highest recognition given to student leaders at the University of Florida. Hall of Fame award winners exemplify outstanding commitment through their active participation in organized activities, community service, and academic achievement.

A surge of unimaginable pride filled our hearts as I helped her embark on a new chapter in Washington. Yet, beneath this joy lay a stark reality. We were drowning in debt, credit cards pushed to their limit, personal loans weighing heavily upon us.

The store, our venture, had become a relentless source of problems, consuming  precious time and draining our already strained resources. It felt like a solitary battle, a cruel irony as the world seemed to prosper while we poured our energy into endless repairs.

Our lives felt adrift, a tangled mess with no clear direction, as one problem simply gave birth to another.

Finally, a glimmer of hope: our son graduated from high school  and stepped into the promise of college. But peace remained elusive. Sleepless nights became my unwelcome companions, and even when exhaustion finally claimed me, it was in the awkward comfort of a recliner, a silent prayer for a miracle whispered into the darkness, a desperate yearning for respite from the constant ache.

FINDING SOLACE AND STRENGTH

Our apartment's balcony, a small haven, became my nightly vigil. As dusk settled, I would wait, praying silently for my husband's safe return from work. Gazing into the sky, the stars became my companions, their distant shimmer holding a strange comfort.

And when the rain fell, a childlike hope would stir within me, my eyes searching the sky for the vibrant arc of a rainbow, a whimsical yearning for that fabled pot of gold. It seems almost comical now, that desperate search.

With tears often blurring my vision, music became my joy, each note a trigger for memories that danced across the night sky like an old film reel. We had journeyed so far together, yet here we stood, on the precipice of an unknown future, the path ahead shrouded in uncertainty.

But amidst the chaos, our children shone like beacons. Their well-being was the force that fueled our weary spirits, the precious light that gave us the strength to keep fighting, to keep hoping for a brighter dawn.
